The most popular tournaments of June

Posted Jul 08, 2018

PUBG China Pro Invitational became the most popular PUBG tournament in the history of esports. It started in May but the peak of the broadcast appeared to be in June. 39 million viewers are twice more compare to StarSeries i-League PUBG 2018. The reason why this tournament was so popular is simple — all popular teams and players from China joined it.

LPL Summer and Demacia Cup Summer are the Chinese League of Legends tournaments which traditionally attracted the attention of millions of fans from the Middle Kingdom. King Pro League as always took the place in our top but it lost a few million viewers. LCK Summer is the Korean league which always was popular in China.

The list of the most popular tournaments among the non-Chinese audience is astonishing. Fortnite loudly declared itself as the major esports competitive discipline for the first time. Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am is the unique event where the best Fortnite players and streamers together with mass media stars from the movie industry, music, sports etc. There were 50 players and 50 stars in total. For example, the most popular Fortnite streamer Ninja played together with famous DJ Marshmello. Actually, they won the tournament. The entire prize pool was used for charity.

UMG Friday Fortnite is a weekly tournament with a small prize pool, but it has an interesting feature. All participants of the tournament broadcast the events from the first person, plus it often involves popular players and streamers. This fact motivates hundreds of thousands of people to observe the tournament.

The third place was taken by the last tournament of the first DPC Dota 2 season — China Dota 2 Supermajor. Virtus.Pro and Team Liquid faced each other in the final thus attracted a lot of viewers. LCK Summer is the Korean League of Legends tournament with the strongest players teams and players in the world so it always gathers a lot of spectators. SL i-League StarSeries Season 5 totaled a lot of viewers as the CIS team Natus Vincere played well and there were a lot of famous teams in the tournament like Mousesports.

We can still observe the dominance of Fortnite on the list of the English-speaking broadcasts still there is some difference. NA LCS Summer replaced the LCK Summer — it is a similar tournament in North America. Overwatch League had a little bit more viewers compared to the May — good news for Blizzard. Summer Games Done Quick took the last place. Compared to the similar event last year the peak amount of viewers fell down by 50.000 which is a lot, but not fatal.

Russian-speaking broadcasts mostly always stable like a rock. Nevertheless, there was a unique moment in June — Warface Open Cup: Season XIII Finals took the fifth place in the list of the most popular Russian broadcasts. Organizers did everything to make this happen: they hired professional esports host Stepan Shulga and chose perfect timing for the tournament when there were no other championships. The key streaming platform was Youtube — the biggest part of viewers was there. All other positions are occupied by Dota 2 and CS:GO. Two tournaments which are unique for this top are CS:GO Asia Championship where the most popular team Natus Vincere took the first place and closed qualifications for the International 2018 in the CIS region.

The list of the most popular Twitch broadcasts in June is quite interesting as two last places are unexpectedly occupied by the Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. Rocket League used to be in our top several months, what is more interesting — the number of viewers slightly decreased compared to the previous Summer finals. The popularity of Super Smash Bros Invitational 2018 was a surprise. There are several reasons for such popularity — Nintendo Switch was bought by millions of people for the last year, besides that the company spent a lot of time to present Super Smash Bros at E3 show.
