The most popular tournaments of October

Posted Nov 06, 2017

As expected, October became the most shocking month of this year — 2017 World Championship broke all records and became the most popular esports event in history. The were also a lot of other major esports events except Worlds. To make long story short: welcome to the monthly esports report from Esports Charts.

Esports has approached a fateful number — more than 100,000,000 people watched one match online! Of course, It has happened in the League of Legends tournament — epic 2017 World Championship, a match between the Chinese team Royal Never Give Up and the three time Worlds champions, the legendary SK Telecom T1. The number of Chinese viewers compared to last year's Worlds has increased almost fourfold!

The second place in the list of the most popular broadcasts was taken by the mobile game King of Glory. This game is very popular In the Middle Kingdom, has a huge audience and a large number of fans. In addition, we could already observe similar numbers earlier. We have already written a blog about mobile games and their place in esports, so if you are interested in this topic, we advise you to read it.

All three other positions are occupied with Dota 2 tournaments. According to the new rules from Valve there should be 2-3 Chinese teams in all championships, that's why all tournaments attract a lot of attention from Middle Kingdom. Unfortunately, all the Chinese teams showed a bad game and flew out of the tournaments early, which made the number of spectators not so great as it could be.

League of Legends is the most popular esports discipline in the world, that's why the number of spectators not from China in the 2017 World Championship is also astonishing. In the other hand, there is almost no huge growth of viewers, compared with last year's World Cup.

The second place took Epicenter 2017 — CS:GO tournament in St. Petersburg. Despite the fact that it is not so popular and huge as ELEAGUE Major or PGL Major Krakow 2017, it nevertheless gathered a large audience.

Two Dota 2 tournaments, ESL One Hamburg 2017 and SL i-League Invitational Season 3, climbed so high primarily because of the Russian-speaking audience. More than half of the spectators are from the CIS.

Hearthstone is very popular game in the West, especially in America. The current champion of the last BlizzCon — Pavel, fought with Orange, a promising and strong Swedish player, and won. The Russian champion is still as strong as he was a year ago!

The strange thing happens: if we look at statistics of english-speaking broadcasts, we will see that there are not so many of them compare to russian-speaking. Truly, they “lit” only at 2017 World Championship. However, there are still an interesting nominee — H1Z1 Invitational. PUBG right now is one of the most popular game in the world, but it is not the only one Battle Royale. This tournament made it clear that the H1Z1 is still quite popular in Europe and America.

The audience from the CIS does not change their traditions — there are only Dota 2 and CS: GO in the top with a clear advantage of MOBA from Valve. The moment that there is no 2017 World Championship clearly demonstrates the attitude of the Russian-speaking community to the League of Legends. Perhaps, if Gambit Esports repeated the success of Albus Nox Luna last year, there would be more spectators, but we will never know for sure.

In the list of the most popular Twitch broadcasts everything is approximately the same as in the English-language top. The only exception is that the third place was taken by the Russian-language broadcast of ESL One Hamburg 2017.
