February Twitch analysis

Posted Mar 15, 2018

Streaming is slowly turning into new TV. Every month more and more people join the online community of viewers, the best proof of this is the growth of Twitch. Esports Charts collected detailed statistics of popular broadcasts and games in February. Check out our blog for more information.

Unconditional and absolute king of Twitch is League of Legends, the most popular PC game in the world. Compared to the previous month, the amount of viewers increased slightly, but the number of watched hours decreased significantly — from 89,000 to 81,000.

Fortnite became extremely popular for the last month. We heard rumors that Epic Games paid a lot of money to the most popular streamers to play Fortnite. We do not know the whole story, but anyway streamers made a powerful push to make a revolution in Twitch.

Fortnite became much more popular than PUBG and, what is more important, steadily keep the audience. The game has another important achievement — Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, the most popular Fortnite streamer, collected a record amount of paid subscribers. He received 100.000 subscriber on March 3rd! Each subscription cost $5, from each one streamer receives $2.5. Ninja earned at least $250.000 only from subscriptions!

The rivalry between Fortnite and PUBG is far away from over, but right now it is clear that Epic Game became a powerful competitor to Bluehole Studio. PUBG loses audience — according to official Steam statistics amount of players decreased by 200.000 in February. However it is likely that a major update will change everything.

Valve’s games (CS:GO and Dota 2) stable as always. Amount of CS:GO viewers decreased since ELEAGUE Major ended. On the other hand esports fans could observe huge amount of Dota 2 tournaments and qualifications.

Each month we can observe that amount of viewers of Blizzard games steadily fall. Overwatch League is watched mostly by the most loyal fans while Hearthstone stagnates and loses viewers. It is likely that the start if new in-game season in Hearthstone, the Year of the Crow, will fix the situation.

The success of Rainbow 6 Siege is one of the most important turnover of February. Six Invitational 2018 gathered 320.000 people at the peak. The tournament built the foundation of further popularization of the game on Twitch. We expect a huge growth of viewer’s base in the coming months.

Fifa 18 suprprisingly hit the bottom of our top. Summer World Championship will likely increase amount of viewers for a short time. We are sure that the release of FIFA 19 in Autumn will bring the game back to leaders of our top.
