October Twitch analysis

Posted Nov 08, 2018

October turned out to be extremely interesting and in many ways revealing month in the world of streaming. Reality proved once again that nothing is eternal and that the audience is quite capricious and always ready for something new.

The main conflict of the past month was caused by the new AAA Battle Royale from Activision — Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. This game demonstrated good results from the very beginning. Sometimes the game was even more popular than Fortnite on Twitch. But overall Epic Game’s Battle Royale proved that it is #1 in the world of streaming right now. In the same time, PUBG continues to fall and it is hard to tell what will help it to regain top position.

Thus we have the new trio of the most popular disciplines: Fortnite, League of Legends and CoD: Black Ops 4. It is curious that League of legends was one step away from the first place, Worlds 2018 needed literally one push to regain the former greatness of the discipline at least for one month. Unfortunately, the grand final of the main esports event of the year was held in November. It is likely that the November monthly report will surprise us.

Autumn is not the main period in the Valve esports cycle. Dota 2 totaled many viewers during tournaments like Maincast Autumn Brawl, which gathered 284.000 people at the peak due to the participation of famous teams. CS:GO fell heavily as there were no major events like FACEIT Major London 2018 in September.

Just Chatting obviously appeared in the top as it became the successor to the IRL section. Be sure — Just Chatting will hold its position for a very, very long time.

A new hit from Rockstar — Red Dead Redemption 2, appeared in our top. The game has only a singleplayer right now, but the public beta multiplayer test will begin by the end of November. Immediately after that, the game will become a stable popular section on Twitch, becoming a direct competitor to GTA V.

Overwatch still cannot recover after Overwatch League finished. Destiny 2 fell down significantly, as the content of the new expansion is quite limited. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the new game and it will disappear next month.

One of the most popular CCG Magic: The Gathering appeared in our top. Just to be clear — we are talking about its online version. Wizards of the Coast, developers of the game, began actively to work with the audience, twitch streamers and YouTubers to make their game more popular. It is likely that MTG will become a stable discipline on Twitch in the nearest future, albeit not at the very top like Hearthstone.
